During Prachtkerst the centre of Alkmaar is entirely given over to Christmas. On the Waagplein, fire baskets burn and Christmas music plays, singer-songwriters perform in the shopping streets, and there is a Kerstcircus (Christmas circus) for children. Visitors can watch an ice sculpture being created, take a photo at the Santa's Selfie Spot and join in the Kerst Sing-a-long; the traditional cheese Christmas tree stands on the Canadaplein. For refreshment there is mulled wine, hot chocolate and poffertjes.
