Biikebrennen (a traditional Frisian fire festival) is a North Frisian custom that symbolically drives out winter; since 2014 it has been part of Germany's intangible cultural heritage. In Westerland participants walk in a torchlight procession from the St Nicolai church to the Biikeplatz south of the campsite, where the great fire is lit after speeches in German and Frisian. The evening traditionally ends with a communal Gruenkohl (kale) meal.
