König-Ludwig-Feuer

A traditional König-Ludwig-Feuer (mountain-top bonfire) is lit on the eve of King Ludwig II's birthday in his honour. On the mountain peaks around Oberammergau, especially on the local Kofel mountain, fires and figures made of lights blaze; a burning royal crown is erected on the Kofel. As darkness falls, brass players from Oberammergau open the evening with a chorale. The custom has been kept up since 1888.
