Mittenwalder Maschkera

During the Maschkera, the Werdenfelser masked carnival, masked figures wearing hand-carved wooden masks move through the village to drive out the darkness of winter. The Maschkera revelry runs from Epiphany (Dreikönig) to Shrove Tuesday (Faschingsdienstag). The highlight is Unsinniger Donnerstag ('Mad Thursday'), when at midday the famous Schellenrührer, twelve men symbolising the twelve months, leap through the village centre with heavy ox bells.
