Almabtrieb der Rinder

The Almabtrieb (ceremonial cattle drive down from the alpine pastures), the highlight of the Bauernwochen (farmers' weeks), brings the cattle back down from their mountain summer into the valley. After an accident-free summer on the high pastures, the festively decorated animals are driven through the village centre to the festival ground at Riedboden. Afterwards an Almfest (alpine festival) with food and traditional Alpine music follows; the Weidegenossenschaft Mittenwald (pasture cooperative) organises the cattle drive and the Gebirgstrachtenverein (mountain costume association) the festival.
