With the Neujahrsumzug der Mainzer Garden, the Fastnacht revellers open the new year. Around a thousand guard members and musicians process from the Ernst-Ludwig-Platz along the Große Bleiche and the Schillerplatz to the Domplatz. The procession is regarded as the prelude to the climax of the Fastnacht campaign.
