The Morgestraich opens the Basler Fasnacht on Monday morning at exactly four o'clock. All the lights in the city centre are switched off, and thousands of drummers and piccolo players set off wearing illuminated head lanterns to the marching tune of the same name. The Cliquen wind through the lanes of the old town until the early hours of the morning.
