Gässle refers to Fasnacht revellers wandering freely through the alleyways of Basel's old town. Especially on the parade-free Tuesday, Cliquen along with individual pipers and drummers play away from fixed routes, turning the entire town centre into a stage. This free-flowing activity is regarded as a particularly atmospheric part of the Basler Fasnacht.
