Cedarburg's identity was shaped by German immigrants who built gristmills and woolen mills along Cedar Creek starting in the 1840s, and the town's oldest gravestones still carry German inscriptions. Its Oktoberfest, held the first full weekend of October, draws upwards of 15,000 visitors with authentic German food such as sauerbraten and Wiener Schnitzel, German beer, polka music and a beer-stein-holding contest. The 2026 event runs Saturday, October 3 through Sunday, October 4.
