Brenham's Maifest, held since 1874, is billed as the oldest continuously running festival in Texas and celebrates the town's German immigrant heritage. It features a downtown parade, junior and senior coronations, a traditional Maypole dance, and German food, music and drink at Fireman's Park. The festival grew out of a Volksfest first held by the German Harugari Lodge before the fire department took over as sponsor in 1881.
