Belleville was shaped by German immigrants who arrived after the 1848 revolutions; by 1870 about 90% of residents were German-born or of German descent. The city's 45th annual Oktoberfest on the historic Public Square benefits local civic groups, including Belleville Sister Cities, the Ainad Shriners and the firefighters' union, with German food, music and beer gardens. The 2026 event runs Friday, September 18 and Saturday, September 19.
