Gronings Ontzet, also known as Bommen Berend, commemorates the lifting of the siege of Groningen by the Bishop of Münster in 1672. It is traditionally celebrated on 28 August with a wreath-laying, a horse show, music and a large fireworks display. Numerous events take place in the city centre.
